Ah, insomnia!

It was one of those nights. Woke up at about 1.30am and that was it. Drifted back to sleep for short periods but on the whole just lay there while my mind went a million miles an hour. Not about anything useful, more about how much I don’t like my work, I’m a crap writer, I should do this, I shouldn’t do that etc, etc, etc. Then it started to rain which is very much needed, but I immediately thought my roof might leak. Instead of just getting up and doing something else, I just lay there hoping I’ll go back to sleep.

But then again I’m in good company. Jenny Crusie recently blogged about insomnia more eloquently than me. Now I have to drag myself through the day. Whine, grumble, curse. At least it’s Friday.

uhhhh…..insommia…..milk helps…warm glass of milk….as I age, Keziah, and I’m in my 50’s…over the hump…I find that insommia and aging comes together. I have had to rearrange my entire life to this…luckily, my husband is almost completely deaf…one time this is a positive…and I get up around 4am…and sit with a cuppa tea and watch the sky…the outline of the dark trees and branches as the sky lightens in the east..just think..plot…think about life and writing and people…usually I have one of the 15 cats that we have picked up from the street and under porches, thrown away, in my lap or on my feet. I use this time to think about what a crappy writer I am…and to angst over plots and characters that don’t seem to ‘obey’ and other sorts of irritants. Something about the freshness of day…the possibilites spread out in front of you, and the miracle of another chance to fuck it up…makes up for the interrupted sleep.

I don’t think that women….as we age..need 8 hours of sleep…bah! nonsense. We need the solitude of a couple of hours alone before the rest of the world is pulling at our teats for attention.

But! In case you are feeling guilty for not sleeping enough..interrupted sleep…try the milk…or get a cat. A couple of cats…train them to sleep in the small of your back. Turn your mattress. Share the milk with the cats before bed…you and they will sleep better.

We are in a drought here..as are you. Nothing better than a tin roof and rain. Nature’s tranquilizers! When the rains come back…place pans and buckets around accordingly…and you will sleep like a baby. So will the cats!
